The Right Pressure for Compression Socks
Compression sock tightness is measured in something called mmHg (millimeters of mercury). It's a widely accepted measurement of pressure.
20-30mmHg is considered the ideal compression level for most people. Though they require some effort to put on and take off they provide the idea balance between therapeutic benefit and comfort. The health advantages they provide are significant, and well worth the effort of getting them on.
Compression Socks Pressure Levels
- 15-20 mmHg: These socks offer a mild compression, which is comfortable and feels like a gentle hug to your calves, though they are less effective therapeutically.
- 20-30 mmHg: This is the pressure range most supported by medical research. It has been shown to assist in sports recovery, enhance circulation during daily wear standing or sitting, aid medical recovery, and help manage mild symptoms of varicose and spider veins (Belczak et al 2019)
- 30-40 mmHg: Recommended for managing serious medical conditions, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), severe swelling (edema), and advanced varicose veins.
All Migs Compression socks are 20-30mmHg for a balance of comfort and therapeutic effectiveness.
How tight should they feel?
Compression socks should fit snugly. You'll notice they're on, especially at first. If you can't feel the compression, or it feels like a cozy hug, you might not have the right fit. That said, compression socks shouldn't cause discomfort. If they're too tight, you'll feel them pinching and digging into the skin. The right fit will feel supportive without any pain.
How do I get them on?
To put on compression socks, start by holding the top of the sock and roll the sock down to the heel. Insert your foot and unroll the sock up your leg. Make sure the sock sits evenly without any twists or wrinkles. Adjust for comfort.
How long can I wear them for?
It's generally safe to wear compression socks all day, particularly if you are easing into their use. If they feel uncomfortable during the initial days, it's advisable to remove them for short periods or adjust as needed. Over time, your legs will adjust to the pressure, and you may wear them comfortably throughout the day.
